Entrance to the Catacomb of the Vigna Randanini

The second door on the far left side of the vestibule led to a small well room encircled by a bench, perhaps utilized for purification of the deceased and for repasts; the other doorway led into the catacomb proper, which also connects to the well room. Apparently the catacomb was used for underground burials by the Jews of Rome from the third to fourth century; regions above had served as pagan burial grounds. |
