Entrance to the Catacomb of Domitilla
on the Via Ardeatina
72. A vaulted room to the right, surrounded by the remains of a bench, served for funerary banquets; the room on the left provided water for cult practices. These chambers were added at about the turn of the fourth century, when the entrance, by way of a luxurious hypogeum of the second century, had been linked to the rapidly growing network of burials. After a watercolor by G. Mariani, 1865. |
